Effect of Interstitial Elements on the Weldability of Nickel Base Alloys-OSU

•High chromium nickel base alloys provide high temperature strength and corrosion resistance
•Weldability of nickel base filler metals is strongly affected by variations in composition, in particular when welded under high-restraint conditions
•Interstitial elements (carbon, nitrogen) along with carbide and nitride forming elements (titanium, niobium) have been shown to strongly affect weld microstructure and cracking susceptibility
•Previous study on FM 82 showed detrimental effect of nitrogen additions (possibly in combination with carbon) on solidification cracking susceptibility


The effect and interaction of interstitials and carbide/nitride forming elements on weld solidification and cracking susceptibility is not well understood.
