Characterization of Laser Power Bed Fusion (L-PBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Heat Treatment-Extended

Additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled new abilities to produce complex aerospace components with nickel base superalloys.

  • Implementation of AM fabricated Inconel 718 (IN718) has been limited by:
    • Diverse properties of as-fabricated (AF) materials as shown by a large body of literature work.
    • Far-from-equilibrium microstructures that raise uncertainty in the high temperature behavior of the IN718.
    • The effect of post-fabrication heat treatment on the microstructure and properties is still not well understood.
