Multiscale Characterization and Modelling for Hybrid Joining of Dissimilar Material Combinations for the Transportation Industry

 

The automotive industry aims to meet future emissions standards by manufacturing with lighter materials.  Conventional resistance spot welding of multi-stacks that combine high-strength steels with low-density alloys creates process as well as metallurgical challenges.  The challenges can be mitigated through the implementation of multi-process joining techniques. The mechanical performance of multi-process joints is not well known and requires extensive testing.  An integrated modeling framework would allow for predictive simulation of multi-process joint performance and ultimately assist automotive weld design.
